Library News March 2014

Julia KristevaThe current issue of JAPA, (Vol. 63 No. 1), which has just arrived in the CPC Library, devotes 60 pages to Julia Kristeva, a French analyst and academic.  There is an introduction to her work, and a translation of “La reliance, ou de l’erotisme maternal,” (Reliance, or maternal eroticism), which Kristeva presented at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis in October 2013.Kristeva’s doctoral dissertation involved the application of psychoanalytic theory to language and literature. She has written about the formation of identity, and the role abjection and otherness play in the process. Her most important contribution to the philosophy of language was her distinction between the semiotic and the symbolic aspects of language. Her writings of the 1980's include transcripts from her practice as an analyst, such as Tales of Love (1983) and Black Sun (1987). Also in this issue the publishers announce that JAPA Online will begin posting Korean and Mandarin translations of selected English psychoanalytic articles from JAPA.You can access the current issue of JAPA in print or online at the CPC Library computer. Also on display in the Library are two articles about Freud’s hysteria theory.  Kate McGowan writes in the latest issue of Discover "The Second Coming of Freud," which reports on the validation of Freud’s theory with MRI. "Neural Correlates of Recall of Life Events in Conversion Disorder," (Aybek S, Nicholson TR, Zelaya F, et al. JAMA Psychiatry. 2014; pp. 52-60) is the report of the scientific experiment referred to in the Discover article.
