Designed for professionals who wish to train in child and adolescent psychoanalysis, a process that opens doors to the inner life of the child.
When working together with the analyst the child has the opportunity over time to explore and understand old experiences, feelings and ways of adapting to them that are interfering with his or her functioning and relationships. In this way progressive development is restored and the capacity to feel good is achieved. This career is immensely challenging and forever interesting.
Program Overview
The Cleveland Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training program is in partnership with the Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development (HPC). HPC and the CPC are committed to quality training of the next generation of child and adolescent psychoanalysts, faculty, and supervisors in Cleveland, Ohio.
The program consists of three components: a four-year didactic curriculum, clinical supervision of psychoanalytic treatments of children, adolescents, and work with parents, and personal psychoanalysis with a training analyst. As part of the training program, candidates will observe in the Hanna Perkins School and work with one case of treatment-via-the-parent.
Program Breakdown

The four-year didactic course is conducted in four eight-week quarters per academic year. Two 1.5-hour seminars are scheduled on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Instructors bring widening points of view and changes in the psychoanalytic field. Coursework will focus on how to build a psychoanalytic practice.
During the first or second year, there will be two additional courses of observations and meetings—one on Infant Observation, possibly at the offices of pediatricians, and the other on Observations of Preschoolers at the Hanna Perkins School. The latter course includes attendance at the Hanna Perkins Friday Afternoon case Seminar (12:40 - 2 PM).
Child and adolescent candidates from all programs will attend case discussions of work with patients of all ages: adults, adolescents, and children.

We are in the process of developing an Integrated (Child/Adult) curriculum that will serve to educate and train candidates in psychoanalysis at both The Hanna Perkins Center and The Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center.

The clinical work begins when the candidate has acquired sufficient knowledge in theoretical psychoanalytic psychology and therapeutic technique, usually in the second course year, and following the eight-week course on Introduction to Treatment. Clinical work will occur in the following areas:
Supervised intensive treatment of three children of various ages and both genders, including work with their parents.
The supervised treatment-via-the-parents of an under-five within the Hanna Perkins School. This includes weekly sessions with the parents, weekly observation in the School and weekly meetings with the teachers.

The candidate will choose a first approved supervisor to consider the cases in their practice and to begin to develop a first analytic case. As the candidate gains experience he/she chooses a second and later a third supervisor. The hours of supervision for each case will follow the guidelines of APsaA. Supervision should occur weekly for a substantial period of the treatment for the first case. The program provides the opportunity for supervision on three required cases.

Candidates may choose a faculty member to act as a mentor. This person will be available to discuss any concerns or interests the candidate may have as their training progresses.

Personal psychoanalysis with a Training Analyst (TSA) is required. The analysis should be concurrent with the training and should continue during the candidate’s supervised work with children. The analysis is financed privately by the student. It is expected and very advantageous for the analysis to begin prior to the didactic seminars. The analysis will continue through at least a major portion of the candidate’s clinical work.

Courses are taught by the faculty of the Cleveland Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training Program and invited guests with diverse professional backgrounds. Overall faculty is drawn from child psychoanalysts at HPC and CPC. At this time they include the following individuals:

The Faculty reviews all aspects of each candidate’s work in a progression committee meeting twice/year. The candidate has the opportunity to provide input regarding his/her progress at this time and gets feedback as well.
The following criteria are used as guidelines for qualification:
Satisfactory completion of all didactic course requirements
Satisfactory clinical work with 3 cases including written treatment reports and presentations
Completion, to a satisfactory termination, of at least one analytic case
Completion of a case of treatment-via-the-parent
All fees connected with the training program need to have been paid
The Education Committee will determine if the candidate meets the qualifications for graduation. Most important is the candidate’s demonstrated capacity to carry out independently competent psychoanalysis of children and adolescents.

Who Can Apply
The Cleveland Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training course is offered to those child specialists in medicine, psychology, social work, counseling, teaching, nursing, child psychiatry, pediatrics, or other disciplines in which the major focus and aim of their work has been or is the care of children. The program is designed for those who have demonstrated a devotion to children and a keen interest in understanding all aspects of personality development. Applicants will preferably be licensed to practice in Ohio or eligible for an Ohio license in their field. Interested parties are welcome to apply; those who may not meet the admission requirements are urged to contact the faculty chair for guidance.
Application Requirements
A Curriculum Vitae which includes academic backgrounds, prior analytic experience, if any, and experiences in the care of children.
Three letters of recommendation from a current employer, current supervisor or, if possible, an analyst familiar with the applicant and his/her work.
A brief statement regarding the development of your interest in child analysis.
College and graduate school transcripts.
Current license or other certification.
Proof of current malpractice insurance (if applicable).
A non-refundable application fee of $50.00.
Personal interviews with the faculty chair and at least three members of the training program’s faculty are pre-requisite for acceptance.

This program is approved by the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA).
In January 2014 The Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center received approval from the Board of Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) for this new child and adolescent psychoanalytic training program for Cleveland. As such this is an official training program of APsaA. Those in training will be able to have candidate membership in APsaA and in the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). In this way they will be connected with those individuals throughout the world who are psychoanalysts of children and adolescents.
Cleveland has been a leader in the field of psychoanalysis since the late 1940’s. The HPC Child Analytic Training Program has been in existence since 1958. CPC, during a similar period, has offered training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis to candidates at the CPC who have had or who are concurrently training in the psychoanalysis of adults. The two organizations are pooling resources to work together to provide child analytic training in Cleveland.
This program is approved for Continuing Education Units.

The Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association-MCE Program to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center as Approved Provider 18PO-341019020, maintains responsibility for the program. This event provides one credit per hour of Continuing Professional Education to psychologists.
Tuition and Fees
Annual program fee is $3,000 for each program year (4 years).
Supervisor fees are negotiated with and paid directly to the supervisor at a minimum of $50 per hour. Supervision begins on a weekly basis.
Annual administrative fee is $500 per year and begins while the candidate completes clinical training after completion of the 4-year course work.
Personal analysis fees are arranged privately between the analyst and the candidate
Students are asked to sign an agreement of financial responsibility prior to the first class.
