Dynamics of Immigration: The Role of Mourning in Establishing Positive Identity as an Immigrant.

Park in front, on south side of the building, on the street, or in the Thornton Parking lot.We will focus on clinical issues arising in work with immigrants based on the literature of our time. To prepare, please read two out of three of the following literary works, one novella and two novels:

  1. "Day of the Butterfly" by Alice Munro (can be found in a collection of Munro’s short stories entitled Dance of the Happy Shades: And other Stories)
  2. "The White Castle" by Orhan Pamuk
  3. "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri

 Optional reading:Immigration and Identity: Turmoil, Treatment, and Transformation by Salman AkhtarLearning Objectives:1. Participants will widen their scope of knowledge of the dynamics of immigration and saying good bye;2. Participants will be able to review the dynamics of mourning and update their knowledge of the bereavement process;3. Participants will be able to apply in their clinical work issues related to the experience of differences in culture;4. Participants will be able to discuss arguments regarding the injustice of criminalizing irregular immigration. AJanickiAnna J. Janicki, M.D., is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst for children, adolescents and adults. She has been in private practice since 1981, specializing in brief and long-term dynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor, in the Department of Psychiatry, CWRU and is active in the training of psychiatric residents at University Hospitals. She was board certified in adult psychoanalysis in 2002 and appointed Adult Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst by the Board of Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 2004.
