Contemporary Sculpture of Ursula von Rydingsvard

A new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) features the sculpture of Ursula von Rydingsvard,whose large-scale, abstract artworks are crafted from cedar beams.  These sculptures are so large that it is rare to view more than one at a time, but this exhibit includes nine pieces and will be on display until March 2011.According to Steven Litt, Plain Dealer Art Critic, vonRydingsvard’s works are “eerily primitive yet utterly contemporary.”  In his review of the exhibit, Litt further states, “….the sculptures appeal to inchoate memories of nature or emotional states and may trigger a wide variety of associations among different viewers.”On February 5, 2012 Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center member Vera Camden, Ph.D will discuss von 
Rydingsvard's practice and artwork through the lenses of psychology, gender
studies, and literary theory.This exhibit will be the last in the museum's Cleveland Playhouse location. In October 2012 MOCA will move to its new permanent home in University Circle's Uptown Neighborhood. The museum building, under construction at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road, was designed by Farshid Moussavi of Foreign Office Architects in London, England.  This picture is from the MOCA website.
