"The Containing vs. Non-Containing Analyst: How Classism Impacts a Patient's Ability to Be Heard and Understood in the Consulting Room"

Discussion will be led by Chanteneel McClendon

----------------------------------------------------------------

In psychoanalysis, the concept of analyzable versus unanalyzable patients is often discussed. However, we must consider whether, in some cases, especially those involving cultural, racial, and class differences, if it is the analyst's own biases and defenses that hinder their ability to identify with, tolerate, and contain the patient’s suffering. How do analysts begin to examine whether their own limitations, influenced by societal bias, might contribute to the patient being rejected from treatment? Therefore, before labeling a patient as unanalyzable, we must first ask whether it is the analyst’s defenses and limitations hindering the therapeutic process, or if the patient is truly not appropriate for treatment.

Free parking is in back of the building. There will be someone at the building’s rear door from 4:15 to 4:45.

This program is FREE and OPEN to the public.
