Child Development Course Open to All Members

Boy at pianoThe Education Committee has decided to open participation in the candidates’ Child Development Course to all members, faculty and students of the Center.  The course will be taught by Scott Dowling and Judy Pitlick; it begins in early September and has 16 weekly sessions on Friday mornings, probably 8:00 to 9:30.  It will be continued the following year with an additional 16 weekly sessions. The exact dates of the meetings will be set in early August. This unusual decision is based on the following considerations:

  • The course will be of interest to everyone who is curious about child development.
  • The course will not teach the technique of conducting psychoanalysis with children.
  • The course will be unique in providing a broad setting in which to consider specific psychoanalytic aspects of child development.  The initial 5-6 sessions will review the physical, neuroscience, cognitive and cultural setting of child development.  Later discussions of specific eras of child development, e.g. infancy, toddlerhood, preschool, etc. will include consideration of these broader issues.  An outline of the course is available here.
  • The central text of the course will be Normality and Pathology of Childhood by Anna Freud. This seminal text has never been adequately appreciated for its opening up of broad new areas of consideration in child analysis.  Its implications have been lost in the general movement away from Anna Freud’s thinking following her death and with the ascendancy of other conceptual approaches to child therapy.
  • The writings of J. M. Tanner on physical development; Jaak Panksepp on the neurological basis of affective development; infancy research on innate capacities; Jean Piaget on cognitive development; The National Research Council, Institute of Medicine on a variety of topics especially familial-cultural considerations in childhood, and Attachment Theory with its interesting delineation of sources of vulnerability in childhood will all be included in the course.  None will be studied in sufficient depth to allow mastery but it is hoped that the path to an enlarged view of child development will be opened to course participants.
  • The course instructors hope to learn from the course. Broad participation will provide more opportunity for discussion and for a variety of points of view.

There are some drawbacks to such a course. There will be more than the usual amount of reading required, some involving unfamiliar vocabulary. A list of the course readings is available in the Members section of this website under PTP Year 2. During the course, there will be “assigned” movies and tapes that will not be required but will add visual impact to the content of the course. There will be a registration fee, the amount to be determined. We are soliciting your interest in participating in this course.  Please let us know of your interest and further details will be made available. Scott Dowling, M.D.         asdowling@gmail.comJudith Pitlick, M.A.           jpitlick@roadrunner.com
