FOOD, DRUGS, AND DESIRE: UNDERSTANDING AND TREATING ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS AND DISORDERS IN PSYCHOANALYSIS AND PSYCHOTHERAPYSATURDAY, APRIL 16, 2011       8:15 am – 3:45 pmBARONETTE RENAISSANCE HOTEL, NOVI, MIModerator:    Sally Rosenberg, D.O.Addiction and addictive behaviors are prevalent throughout society.  Many people relish or struggle with their use of tobacco, prescription and non-prescription drugs, alcohol, food, sex, work, shopping, or gambling. Almost everything can be used in addictive ways. What are the dynamics of addictive behavior?  How do new understandings in neuroscience guide our interventions with patients struggling with addictive behaviors?  How do we think about and make use of the transference and countertransference in working with these patients? Our two distinguished speakers, widely known for their work in addictions and eating disorders, will address these questions and more.Brian Johnson, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Addiction Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University, uses his background as a brain scientist, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and child of two addicted parents to describe addiction with great empathy and intellectual rigor. Dr. Johnson is the author of Widespread Zombification in the 21st Century and the Wars of the Zombie Masters (Gegensatz Press, 2009), which is written for children and parents, and describes how drugs change the brain and take over the will (zombification).Kathryn Zerbe, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University and Training Analyst at Oregon Psychoanalytic Center, is former director of the Eating Disorder Program at Menninger Clinic.  She will give special attention to understanding – and then using – the clinician’s countertransference feelings and dilemmas to constructively enhance recovery. Her most recent book is Integrated Treatment of Eating Disorders: Beyond the Body Betrayed (Norton, 2008.)Discussants:  Howard Shevrin,  Mary Adams, L.M.S.W. 5 CE and CME CREDIT HOURSSymposium brochure Registration information and rates are available at www.mpi-mps.org.  Special rates for students. For information, or call Monica Simmons at (248) 851-3380 or email at monicasimmons@ix.netcom.com.
