Please join us as we discuss Beloved based on the novel of the same name by Toni Morrison. Vera Camden will be leading the discussion.
Ohio native, Toni Morrison’s masterpiece, Beloved, captures the anguish of America’s legacy of slavery. At the center of Morrison's narrative is Sethe's murder of her child in a confounding act of biblical proportion. Sethe slaughters the innocent, her Beloved. Director, Jonathan Demme’s 1998 film version of Morrison’s novel aspires to bring this tale the screen. We will discuss the continued relevance of this film to our tumultuous world today and to ourselves. We will ask: what does psychoanalysis have to say about such an appalling act? Can our theory of the mind speak to such a rending of the heart?
This event is part of “Beloved: Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison,” a statewide celebration as part of America250. Co-sponsored by the Rust Belt Humanities Lab at Ursuline College.
