Program Description: Beginning with a description of 12 crucial moments in a case (biographical moments in the life of an analysand), this presentation will utilize Freud's 'Three Essays on Sexuality' as a means of tracking various drive phenomena as of crucial importance in the symptoms, identifications, modes of jouissance, relations, transference and repressed fantasies of an analysand. The granularity of the case will prove crucial in bringing various descriptions and facets of Freud's notion of the drive to life. This approach will highlight the importance of the role of sexuality in the treatment of neuroses, and it will offer a critical - yet hopefully fruitful - engagement with such notions as the orality and anality applied in a characterological fashion.
Learning Objectives:
1) understand, via an applied example, how the transformations and repression of a cluster of drive impulses across a life enables clinicians to grasp something of the singularity of a case.
2) utilize various examples - from Freud and from the case presentation - of the myriad forms of drive phenomena so as to illuminate a reading of other cases.
Derek Hook is a Professor in Psychology and a clinical supervisor at Duquesne University and an Extraordinary Professor of Psychology at the University of Pretoria. A scholar and practitioner of psychoanalysis, he is one of the editors (along with Calum Neill) of the Palgrave Lacan Series and of the four-volume Reading Lacan's Ecrits (with Calum Neill and Stijn Vanheule). He is the author of Fanon, Psychoanalysis and a Critical Psychology of the Decolonial (2025), Whiteness at the Abyss (2025) and the co-editor of Fanon, Phenomenology and Psychology (with Leswin Laubscher) and the co-editor of Lacan and Race (with Sheldon George). He maintains a YouTube channel with many lectures on Lacanian Psychoanalysis.
