Dr Slavin will present a detailed clinical account of the treatment of a young man suffering massive psychic pain and immobilization. The treatment will be presented through excerpts from recorded sessions. During the course of this treatment the frozen father-son relationship began to transform in the unexpected recognition of the father's trauma and its effects on his son. Discussion of this treatment will focus on the developmental disruption and suffocation personal agency in childhood relational experiences and the way these may sometimes be reopened in treatment. We will examine how the ability to experience oneself as an "agent" is established and how it may be disrupted in the course of relational engagements and conflicts during development.2. We will examine how these ideas may be usefully applied in the clinical context of the psychotherapeutic encounter and the potential power for transformation in adult parent-child relationships.
