Lifelong Clevelander Erin O'Brien will talk about how the tragedy of her brother John's 1994 suicide and the nuanced aftermath led her to the keyboard. The former Cleveland Scene columnist will also discuss a writing life lived mostly in the trenches and celebrated in humor.O'Brien will take questions on her own work as well as her brother's body of work, which includes his groundbreaking 1990 novel "Leaving Las Vegas," which went on to glitter on the silver screen after John O’Brien’s death. The film garnered numerous accolades including an Academy Award for Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Ben Sanderson.During Erin O'Brien's 14-year writing career, her eclectic features and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Plain Dealer and Scene. Cleveland's Indie press, Red Giant Books, published her humorous food memoir, 'The Irish Hungarian Guide to the Domestic Arts" in 2012. O'Brien is currently the development news editor for Fresh Water Cleveland, a weekly e-magazine and website that reports on What's Next? in and around Cleveland.
