The Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center’s Prize Essay Committee has announced that Laura Hengehold, Ph.D. has joined  the committee overseeing the competition.  Dr. Hengehold, an associate professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy at CWRU, teaches and researches on political philosophy and feminist philosophy, using perspectives influenced by Continental philosophy and psychoanalysis.  The CPC Essay Committee has sought to include academic members to broaden its perspective; Dr. Hengehold takes the place of Jeffrey Longhofer, Ph.D. who was a committee member until he left the university. Many of Dr. Hengehold’s essays explore the relationship between language and the lived experience of embodiment. She is especially intrigued by the way in which political conflict over the right to speak in different situations shapes women's experience of their own bodies as active forces or passive obstacles to joy.  She is also a contributing member to the French and Francophone Interdisciplinary Studies Program at CWRU and to the Women and Gender Studies Program, and serves on their Advisory Committee.  She has held a long-standing interest in psychoanalysis, and incorporates aspects of it into her writings.  Her most recent book is titled "The Body Problematic: Foucault and Kant on Political Imagination."
